Mission Statement

Huntsville Ballet School’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of dance training to all its students, from the recreational dancer to those who plan to pursue a professional career.

Celebrating over 50 years of dance training in Huntsville, the Huntsville Ballet School offers open enrolment for the 2015 - 2016 season. Class offerings include a variety of art forms and span generations with sessions ranging from Mommy and Me through Open Division lessons for adults. Students at the school have an opportunity to perform with the Huntsville Ballet Company and Huntsville Symphony Orchestra in The Nutcracker at the Von Braun Center concert hall. 

HBS is the official school of the Huntsville Ballet Company and provides the finest classical ballet training in Alabama. The school's curriculum is targeted to develop strong, flexible and versatile dancers that can adapt to a variety of dance forms. The faculty at HBS is committed to helping students reach their full potential. The syllabus that the HBS faculty follows is proven to train the highest caliber of professional dancers. Students from HBS have been accepted into prestigious programs and professional companies across the country. While all students do not choose to pursue a career in dance, the dedication, discipline and work translate into other aspects of their lives to make them successful. 

Huntsville Ballet Company's production of the Nutcracker is open to all students from Ballet I through adult by audition. This year's performance of the Nutcracker will be performed at the Von Braun Center and will be accompanied by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. Students chosen to perform in the Nutcracker must take a minimum of two ballet technique classes per week (no exceptions).


Rachel Butler, School Director
Ms. Butler has served as the School Director of the Huntsville Ballet School and the Ballet Mistress for the Huntsville Ballet Company since 2008. Ms. Butler trained with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and the Atlantic Contemporary Ballet Academy. As a professional Dancer Ms. Butler danced soloist and principle roles with Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet and as a guest artist throughout the United States. Ms. Butler's teaching credits include Pacific Northwest Ballet,The Rock School for Dance Education, Mid-Atlantic Ballet and Albany Dance Institute. She is a sought-after guest teacher for summer intensives across the country. 

Phillip Otto, Artistic Director
Mr. Otto has served as the artistic director of the Huntsville Ballet Company since 2008. Mr. Otto trained at the School of American Ballet, American Ballet Theatre School, and the Joffrey School. Mr. Otto danced principal and soloists roles with Milwaukee Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet. After retiring as a featured soloist from Pacific Northwest Ballet in 1996, Mr. Otto joined the faculty of Pacific Northwest Ballet School. He went on to direct Pacific Northwest Ballet's student company and developed outreach and educational programs. Mr. Otto has worked and trained with George Balanchine, Peter Martins, and Jerome Robins. In addition, Mr. Otto serves as permanent guest faculty for The Rock School of Dance Education in Philadelphia.
